Upasana Mandir
This is a place of worship; the heart of Gandhiji’s Karmayoga; the basis of activities at the Ashram… Gandhiji used to consider prayer to be sacred food for the soul. It was prayer that used to give him strength to take his decisions in the interest of the nation. After performing prayer at 4:20 in the morning, all Ashram residents used to engage with their individual responsibilities, and perform prayer once again at 7 in the evening, after which they would take stock of the day’s work. This place has been witness to Gandhiji’s decisions and thinking process, especially through difficult and trying moments. This is the place where he gave several discourses on matters spiritual, social, political, developmental and those pertaining to Satyagraha. On March 10, 1922 when he was arrested, this is the place where he prayed before he was taken to Sabarmati jail for the first time. He had chosen to pray under an open sky, in an open space.
