Magan Niwas

Magan Niwas

This is the residence of Maganlal Gandhi, a true companion of Gandhiji since his days in South Africa. In relationship, he was Gandhiji’s nephew, but by Karma or actions he was one of the first followers of Gandhian ideology. He handled the entire responsibility of running the Ashram as a skilled organizer, Gandhiji used to call Maganlal the very breath or “prana of the Ashram”. He brought about a revolution by providing momentum to Khadi production with various designs for the spinning-wheel, which was considered to be a symbol of financial progress for the poor. Musical programs of devotional singers Pandit Khare and music maestro Pandit Omkarnathji used to be organized at Magan Niwas. After Maganlal’s death in 1928, Gandhiji stayed here for a few months, and expressing his grief he said, “I have become a widow.”
