Bapu’s Room in Hriday Kunj

Bapu’s room in Hridaykunj

This is Bapu’s room. Gandhiji used to work here all day. Discussions and talks with colleagues, politicians, leaders, and visitors all took place here. Consultations with prominent leaders were also held here, on this very mat. Gandhiji wrote several significant newspaper articles, letters, applications, essays, news of visits, and more sitting at this very table. Gandhiji used to write with both his left and right hands. A stand was placed here, so that he could write whilst standing, when he would get tired of sitting down.

Once, when after an intense search, when this traditional spinning-wheel was located in Vijapur village, seventy kilometres away from Ahmedabad, Bapu is known to have exclaimed with joy “Finally, we found it! A true long-lost friend of humanity is found again!” However After spinning yarn on this wheel for as many as four hours Bapu, he realised then that many changes would have to be made to its design. He then announced a prize of five thousand rupees to the person who could make a spinning-wheel that could used manually produce more yarn,, in a shorter time. Around 34 models were made, yet bapu was not satisfied, so announced a prize of one lakh Rupees for the ideal spinning-wheel. It was only after his demise, that spinning-wheel was designed in the year 1951 the Ambar Charkha. Gandhiji was not against machines or technologies parse; the only thing he wished was that human beings would not become slaves to them.
